Mānuka honey is a unique and highly prized type of honey that is created by bees that forage the flowers of the Mānuka tree, which is native to New Zealand. Mānuka honey contains high concentrations of a natural organic compound called called Methylglyoxal (MGO) which contributes to its amazing health and wellness properties.
The initial discovery of the antibacterial properties of Mānuka honey was made by professor Peter Molan at the University of Waikato in New Zealand in the mid-1980s. Dr. Molan's continued work & publications spurred world-wide interest in the honey by consumers and researchers alike.
It took a team of researchers in Germany in 2008 led by professor Henle to isolate and identify dietary Methylglyoxal (MG/MGO) as the organic compound that most directly correlates with the antibacterial properties of Mānuka Honey.
Methylglyoxal is formed by a natural conversion of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) present in the nectar of the Mānuka flowers. Since Dr Henle's research was published, the MGO concentration in Mānuka honey has become the de facto standard for measuring the honey's purity and its potency as a wellness product.
Here are some common uses of mānuka honey.
Mānuaka honey's antibacterial and antiviral properties can help to reduce cold and flu symptoms while combatting the underlying infection.
Consuming Mānuka honey may assist with digestive issues such as acid reflux, GERD, gastric ulcers, and more. Antibacterial & Anti-Inflammatory properties contribute to digestive health benefits.
